Thousands of Colombian taxi drivers blocked Bogota's main streets on Friday to protest against the assassinations of eight drivers and the continuous taxi-car theft.
"We are going to continue blocking streets, more colleagues are willing to join our stoppage because we are tired of police giving traffic tickets at night but they do not establish checkpoints," one of the taxi-driver protesters said.
The taxi drivers blocked the main streets of Bogota to demand police protection after eight drivers were murdered earlier this year.
These drivers were killed because of the terrible security situation and Colombian officials are not interested in implementing security measures, taxi drivers said.
Taxi Association president Erminso Bermudez said that if the government does not respond they will call all transportation drivers to join the protest.
The taxi drivers' protest has caused massive traffic jams throughout the Colombian capital.
A meeting between taxi drivers' representatives and traffic police officials was scheduled on Friday to try to reach an accord granting 24-hour security to taxi drivers and passengers.
