Palestinian Prime Minister-designate Salam Fayyad will attend an emergent Arab foreign ministerial meeting, slated for Monday at the Arab League (AL) headquarters in the Egyptian capital, Egypt's MENA news agency reported on Saturday.
Fayyad, who doubles as foreign minister of the Ramallah-based Palestinian caretaker government, is expected to arrive here on Sunday, MENA quoted Palestinian chief delegate to the AL Hussein Abdel-Khaleq as saying.
Fayyad will discuss with other top Arab diplomats means of reviving the Middle East peace process and reactivating the Arab Peace Initiative to come up with a just and durable solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, Abdel-Khaleq added.
Fayyad will also hold talks with Egyptian officials on the Palestinian developments during his stay in Egypt, which is the second stop after Jordan in Fayyad's first Arab tour since he assumed office last month.
Fayyad was tasked by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas with forming an emergent government in mid June after Abbas sacked the Hamas-led coalition government following Hamas' takeover of the Gaza Strip.
On July 13, Fayyad's emergency cabinet resigned and formed an interim caretaker cabinet. But the would-be 12th Palestinian government is still unapproved by the Hamas-dominated parliament, which failed to convene due to the differences between Hamas and its rival Fatah movement.
The Arab Peace Initiative, first approved in 2002 and reactivated during an Arab summit in Riyadh late March, offers that all Arab countries recognize of Israel on condition that Israel withdraws from all Arab territories it occupied during the 1967 six-day war, including East Jerusalem.
