A U.S. soldier was shot dead during combat operations north of Baghdad on Sunday, the military said in a statement.

The brief statement failed to give elaboration about the soldier's death.

It said only that the soldier's unit continue working side-by- side with the Iraqi army in the area to conduct cordon and search operations against insurgents.

The latest death brings the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq to more than 3,645 since the Iraq war broke out in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
