The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Australia signed on Sunday two treaties on extradition of criminals and mutual legal assistance on criminal matters, the official Emirates News Agency reported.

The two treaties were signed in Canberra, capital of Australia, by the UAE Minister of Justice Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhahiri and Australian Minister for Justice and Customs David Johnston, the report said.

The treaties cover extradition cooperation between the two countries for crimes such as human trafficking, money laundering, corruption and terrorism.

The two treaties constitute a significant step towards cementing mutual cooperation aimed at fighting international crime, and will enhance the ability of their two countries to fight trans- border crime.

Such agreements make sure criminals will not get away with their crimes once they cross international borders and enable countries to exchange help and data to detect, investigate and follow up on criminal acts, Johnston was quoted as saying.
