The United Nations Electoral Expert Monitoring Team (EEMT) is set to begin this week its second visit to Nepal, a press statement issued by the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) said Monday.

The five-member team, led by Dr. Rafael Lopez-Pintor of Spain is here to monitor the constituent assembly election process.

Appointed directly by the UN Secretary-General, the members of the EEMT are responsible for reviewing all technical aspects of the electoral process and reporting to the Secretary-General on the conduct of the election.

The EEMT submitted its first report to the Secretary-General and the Nepali government on July 17.

It also urged the Election Commission to initiate a comprehensive voter education campaign and recommended that additional period of registration be considered in order to allow inclusion of new political parties in the process and to widen the participation of ethnic communities.

The expert team, established under the mandate of the UN Security Council Resolution 1740, reports to the Secretary-General and operates separately from the UNMIN's Electoral Assistance Office, which provides technical assistance to the Election Commission.
