Russia on Monday said it supported the efforts of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to overcome the crisis in Palestine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Abbas, who is on a visit to Moscow, "We know the situation on Palestinian territories. We firmly support you as a legal leader of all Palestinians and we support your efforts aimed at restoring the unity of the Palestinian people and resuming the Middle East peace process," the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
Abbas will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
"I'm convinced that the upcoming meeting on July 31 with Russian President Vladimir Putin will allow both sides to determine ways to interact in bilateral relations and the Middle East settlement," Lavrov said.
Abbas arrived in Moscow on Sunday for a three-day working visit.
The visit was initially scheduled for June, but was postponed when the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in mid June.
