British Defense Ministry announced on Monday that a British Royal Marines was killed in southern Afghanistan on Sunday.

The Defense Ministry had informed the death to the next of kin and further details would be issued after a 24-hour period, a spokesman of the ministry said.

It is the fourth member of the British armed forces had been killed in the region in the past week, and brings the number of British military fatalities in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001 to 68.

The Britain is among the largest contributors to the NATO mission in Afghanistan, with 7,100 troops based in Helmand province in the south of the country.
