A Salvadorian soldier suffered a leg wound in Iraq during an insurgents' attack on a convoy in the Wasit province city of Numaniya, according to news on Monday.
A Salvadorian Defense Ministry statement said that the soldier, 27-year-old Corporal Alvaro Mauricio Meza Martinez, had been hit in his right thigh and would be treated at a Baghdad hospital.
El Salvador has deployed soldiers in Iraq since 2003. It sends 380 troops a time for a six-month tour of duty. Meza is among the eighth such contingent.
Five Salvadorians have died in Iraq and more than 20 have been injured, mostly by landmines.
Salvadorian President Elias Antonio Saca said he would send the ninth contingent to Iraq in August, but this time it will only have 300 soldiers. Under the terms of the Legislative Assembly's decree, El Salvador's military presence in Iraq will end in December.
El Salvador is the only Latin American nation to back the U.S.-led military intervention in Iraq.
