Two suspected leftwing guerrillas were killed in an encounter with Army troops in Camarines Sur province in the central Philippines late Monday, a regional military spokesman said on Tuesday.
The firefight began at around 5:30 p.m. when a squad from the 42nd Infantry Battalion while on patrol in Burabod village in Calabanga town encountered a group of New People's Army (NPA) rebels, said spokesman for the Armed Forces Southern Luzon Command Rhoderick Parayno.
There were no casualties on the Army side, Parayno said, adding that the remains of the two rebels and an M16 rifle were recovered from the scene.
The 7,100-strong NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign from the countryside for nearly four decades.
