Shalit''s captors have said that he could only be released if Israel freed 1,450 Palestinians in Israeli jails, including 450 women, patients and children.

They demanded the 450 Palestinian prisoners should be freed as soon as Shalit was handed over the Egyptian mediator, and another 1,000 prisoners should be freed after he was handed over to Israel.

Hamas accused Israel of rejecting a list of Palestinians who Hamas desired for release. But Israel said it would never free Palestinians involved in killing Israelis.

The talks on finalizing the prisoners'' swap had stopped after Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip on June 14 following days of bloody fighting with rival Fatah, led by President Mahmoud Abbas.
