Gbagbo, who was received by Soro on arrival at Bouake airport, was visiting the northern part of the country for the first time since the FN, whose secretary general is Soro, launched an unsuccessful coup against him in September 2002.
As an important sign of national reconciliation, Gbagbo and Soro concluded a peace accord in Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, on March 4, 2007 and in accordance with the agreement, Soro was appointed to the position of prime minister with the specific task of spearheading the peace process in the country.
According to the peace accord, the two sides agreed to reunify the country by disarming former fighters, redeploying regional administration within the country and organizing elections, which have been postponed on several occasions since October 2005 owing to political disagreements.
