The United States said on Wednesday it would offer maritime security course for Kenyan officials to help combat security threats along the East African nation's coastline.
A statement from the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi said the course will cover basic security operations throughout the port of Mombasa to include the proper use of available resources.
"This course combines basic port security with an understanding of how to comply with portions of the International Maritime Organization's ISPS Code for Port Security," the statement said.
"This training incorporates worldwide standards for day to day operations as well as responding to incidents that may occur in a port."
The statement said the training was part of the ongoing U.S.- Kenyan partnership and comes amid concerns about the potential exploitation of the Kenyan coast by criminal groups.
Last year, Washington gave Kenya patrol boats valued at 3 million U.S. dollars "to help the authorities to combat illegal arms trafficking and drug trafficking, and help Kenya protect its Economic Exclusion Zone".
