Peru holds an "irreversible" policy of recognizing the People's Republic of China as the only representative of the Chinese people, Peruvian Deputy Foreign Minister Gonzalo Gutierrez told Xinhua in an interview Wednesday.
"We respect China's policy to treat Taiwan as its province," Gutierrez said in response to Taiwan's desire for a United Nations seat.
Noting that Peruvian President Alan Garcia is due to visit China on Sept. 12, he said China and Peru will take the opportunity to renew the bilateral Cultural Cooperation Convention for 2007-2010.
A review of Chinese government and private investment projects in Peru is currently underway, he said.
"In November 2008, as part of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, we expect China and Peru to sign a major trade agreement, and we cannot rule out a free trade agreement," said Gutierrez.
Direct flights between China and Latin America, which he said will boost business and reduce transportation costs, are also being considered.
The last six years have seen a six-fold increase in Peru-China trade, which totaled 3.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2006. "Peru has a great deal to offer China, especially in the agricultural sector," said Gutierrez.
