Gunfire and mortar attacks in two areas near Baghdad killed four people and wounded eight others on Thursday, police said.
Fierce fighting broke out in the town of Jbela, 80 km south of Baghdad, between gunmen and residents of the town, killing three civilians, a police source from the nearby Hilla City told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
An Iraqi army force rushed to the area to secure the town, but a roadside bomb detonated near one of their vehicles, damaging the vehicle and seriously wounding two soldiers aboard, the source said.
In a separate incident, mortar barrage struck the town of Balad, some 80 km north of Baghdad, killing a child and wounding six people, local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The attack damaged several houses in the town, which has become the scene of many tit-for-tat sectarian killings between Shiite militias in the town and Sunni fighters in surrounding rural area.
