Former Thai minister appointed next ASEAN secretary-general

The foreign minister of Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) have endorsed former Thai foreign minister Surin Pitsuwan as the next secretary general of ASEAN, the 10-nation bloc announced on Thursday.

Leaders of the ASEAN will confirm the appointment of Surin for a five-year term at their November summit in Singapore. He will succeed Singapore's Ong Keng Yong beginning Jan. 1, 2008.

The 57-year-old Surin served as Thailand's foreign minister from 1997 to 2001.

Founded in 1967, ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
