Foreign ministers attending the 14th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Thursday expressed deep concern over the situation in the Middle East and urged for "substantial progress in the quest for a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in that part of the world."
In a statement at the close of the forum held here Thursday, Philippine Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, who chaired the meeting, said that the ministers supported the commitment of the parties involved to bring an end to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
Part of that commitment is to lay the foundations for an independent, democratic and viable Palestinian state side by side with Israel in peace and security "as a step towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East, consistent with the Roadmap and UN Security Council resolutions," said Romulo.
The ministers, according to Romulo, likewise expressed deep concern over the report of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in May 2007 that Iran had not suspended its enrichment related activities.
They strongly urged Iran to comply with all relevant UN Security Council resolutions and IAEA requirements and resolutions, he added.
"The ministers stressed the urgent need for a diplomatic solution and comprehensive arrangement with Iran while respecting Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy under safeguards and in accordance with its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, " Romulo said.
Romulo said that the ministers voiced their concern over the continued instability in Iraq and reaffirmed their support for the Iraqi government and its efforts to ensure unity, security, stability and prosperity in that nation.
