Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and panish Vice Prime Minister Maria Fernandez signed two agreements on Thursday in Managua to forgive the Central America nation's debts and provide health aid to it.
The debt relief document was signed at the end of the 7th Spain-Nicaragua Mixed Commission meeting.
After its conclusion, Ortega read a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, expressing appreciation of its cancellation of 26.44 million euros (over 33 million U.S. dollars) in debts.
"We are grateful and acknowledge Spain's gesture," Ortega said at a joint press conference with Fernandez.
Zapatero has said that the condonation will be carried out through a debt-exchange program and that the funds will be destined to promote Nicaragua's development and reduce its poverty.
The two countries also signed an agreement on Spain's adherence to its health aid to Nicaragua until 2011.
Fernandez arrived in Managua on Wednesday to continue his Latin American tour, which also includes Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, Honduras and Guatemala.
