Over 800,000 people have registered to take part in the forthcoming Togolese legislative elections, sources close to the Independent National Electoral Commission ( CENI) said Thursday.
"The process of compiling the electoral roll has just began and we can reliably say that more than 800,000 people have already registered as voters," according to the source.
The CENI extended the period for electoral census process that was scheduled to end on July 29, 2007 by three more days in order to make up for lost time that was occasioned by several material and technical shortcomings that have marred the process.
Among the shortcomings, which have been reported since the launch of the exercise, include the lack of IT skills among some of the officials who are charged with registering voters, lateness in the distribution of voter registration records to polling stations, power blackouts and difficulties experienced in the identification of voters who lack identity cards.
Some Togolese opposition political parties, who are not part of the government of national unity, have called for a further extension of the deadline saying that the three days are not enough to make for the lost time.
According to reliable sources, the CENI is already contemplating such a move.
