A total of 506 guns and a large amount of bullet rounds have been seized and two smugglers arrested in raids aimed at halting arms smuggling and organized crime, Kosovo Police Service (KPS) said Thursday.

"The operation was a result of a four-month long investigation, " KPS said in a statement.

Most of the weapons confiscated on Wednesday were 6.35 mm caliber handguns, each of which could sell for between 80 and 150 euros (between 110 U.S. dollars and 208 dollars) in Kosovo's black market, KPS said, adding that the police also seized several hunting rifles and approximately 2,000 bullet rounds.

Police also confiscated two Mercedes vehicles, 8,000 euros (11, 080 dollars) in cash, and two cell phones in the operation when they searched five houses in the capital Pristina and the vicinity of Podujevo.

A third person involved in the arms-smuggling ring managed escaping, but his identity is known, police said.

KPS spokesman Veton Elshani told local media that most of the weapons came from Macedonia but that they did not represent a potential terrorist threat.

"This is a case of arms smuggling," Elshani said.
