Togolese opposition political parties, which are not part of the government of national unity, have called a protest march to denounce impunity and the malpractices that have marred the ongoing electoral process.
A statement entitled "Appeal to the People" has been signed by about five political parties, including the Union of the Forces of Change (UFC), the main opposition party in the country. In addition, several organizations drawn from the civil society are also expected to take part in the march.
But in a move that has been seen as a blow to the success of the march, the Togolese Observatory for Good Governance, whose president is Martial Akakpo, has distanced itself from the march. According to a statement sent to media houses, the observatory refuted any claims of involvement in the organization of the planned march and denounced the fact that its name had been listed among organizers of the march.
Meanwhile, Gilchrist Olympio, a prominent Togolese politician and president of the UFC, who lives in exile in Accra, Ghana and Paris, France, is expected to arrive in the country shortly not only to take part in the march but also to register as a voter for the forthcoming legislative elections, according to reliable sources within the opposition.
