French President Nicolas Sarkozy Friday conveyed "his most sincere condolences" following the train accident that occurred Wednesday night in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) leaving about 100 people dead.
"It's with great emotion that President Sarkozy learnt of the accident that occurred in Western Kasai, in the DRC, which left over 100 people dead and many more injured," the French presidential office said in a statement.
"Under these painful circumstances, President Sarkozy, personally and on behalf of the French people conveys his most sincere condolences to DRC's President Joseph Kabila as well as the families of victims," according to the statement.
The accident occurred when a cargo train derailed Wednesday night at Tshibahu, near River Lembe, about 175 km from Kananga, Western Kasai. The majority of those who perished in the accident were illegal passengers, who probably bribe train officials to be allowed to hide in cargo wagons, according local sources.
