The immigration law enforced on Friday in Portugal has been criticized by organizations that want clarification on what kind of illegal foreigners can regularize their stay in the country.
The new law, which was published on June 4 in the local daily La Republica, defines the conditions and procedures for entry, stay and exit of foreigners from Portugal.
Associations of immigrant communities blamed the law for not clarifying what kind of illegal immigrants can actually regularize their stay in Portugal.
The groups, however, acknowledged the law has some positive aspects, such as less paperwork for foreigners and the legalization of minors that study in the country.
The law also increases the expenses of enterprises that hire foreigners, punishes convenience marriages and tightens the fight against human trafficking and illegal immigration.
The law was favored by the Social Party and the Social Democratic Party and was approved in May by the parliament.
