The U.S. House passed two bills at a Saturday session, imposing heavy taxes on oil companies while giving tax breaks and other incentives to encourage the use of renewable energy.

Taxes amounting to 16 billion U.S. dollars on oil firms were endorsed with a vote of 221 to 189. Republican opponents said the legislation ignored the need to produce more domestic oil, natural gas and coal.

Earlier, the House approved a package with billions of dollars in tax breaks for renewable energy in a bid to boost the use of biofuels, wind power and other green energy sources.

"We are turning to the future," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
