The African Union (AU) said Saturday it is deeply concerned about the detention of South Korean hostages by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"It deplores the act of taking innocent people hostage, an act which subjects not only the victims, but also their loved ones to unnecessary stress," said a statement from the AU headquarters.

The pan-African body also condemned the execution of two of the 23 hostages and strongly urged that no further execution of the remaining 21 hostages occurs, said the statement.

The AU hoped this unfortunate event will be brought to a speedy end, it said.

A total of 23 South Koreans were kidnapped by the Taliban militants on a road in the central Ghazni province on July 19. Two male hostage were executed on July 25 and July 30 separately.
