Eleven people were killed and 16 others wounded during two mortar volleys which respectively struck queues of civilian cars outside two fuel stations in Baghdad on Sunday, an Interior Ministry source said.
"Nine mortar rounds landed on civilian cars lining up outside a fuel station in Fdhiliyah neighborhood in eastern Baghdad early in the morning, killing 11 people and wounding 10 others," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The attack also destroyed 15 cars, setting off heavy columns of black smoke, the source said.
Meanwhile, civilian cars queued outside a fuel station in the Mashtal neighborhood were also hit by another mortar barrage, which wounded six people and set several cars on fire, the source added.
Irregular distribution of fuel in Baghdad caused many Iraqis to spend hours at the fuel stations to get their needs.
On Wednesday, a suicide bomber drove an oil tanker rigged with explosives into a busy petrol station in Mansour neighborhood and blew it up, killing up to 50 people and wounding some 60 others.
