Iran on Sunday again ruled out the possibility of suspending its uranium enrichment program, saying the Western demand was "totally unacceptable," the official IRNA news agency reported.
Foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini made the remarks at his weekly press conference, in response to a recent report by the German magazine Focus quoting Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani as saying that suspension was not out of the question.
"This is not true, I personally talked to Mr. Larijani in this regard. The magazine has reported his comments inappropriately," said Hosseini.
"Larijani said the issue of suspension is irrational and unacceptable and he has described enrichment as vital," he added.
The German magazine Focus has cited Larijani as saying that a nuclear suspension could be a result of negotiations with the world powers, suggesting that Iran's hardline position would have a major shift.
The UN Security Council has imposed two sanction resolutions against Tehran's nuclear program since last December, demanding a halt to the uranium enrichment program.
Iran's senior officials, however, have repeatedly denied the request.
The Unite States and Western countries accused Iran of developing atomic weapons under a civilian cover, but Tehran insisted that it only wants to generate electricity by nuclear power.
