Seven million Angolans have been registered for the 2008 general elections, Angola's official news agency ANGOP reported on Sunday.
Virgilio de Fontes Pereira, coordinator of Angola's Inter- ministerial Commission on the Electoral Process, was quoted as saying that "seven million Angolans have already been registered" before the registration campaign is to close at the end of August.
"I'm satisfied with the result of the registration campaign," he told reporters on Saturday in the southern province of Cunene after meeting with senior officials and coordinators of the Cunene provincial executive commissions for the electoral process.
According to him, the government has started beginning from August special registration campaigns for sick people, soldiers and paramilitaries.
He said greater efforts should be made to cover inpatients in various hospitals of the country to convince them to join the registration and participate in the 2008 elections.
