Afghan police killed 13 Taliban insurgents in the southern Zabul province, an official said Monday.

Some militants attacked a police checkpoint in Shahjoy district in Zabul on Sunday night, provincial government spokesman Gulab Shab Alikhil told Xinhua.

The police fought back and killed 13 enemies, he said, adding there were no casualties of the police.

Some militants' weapons were also seized from the battlefield, the spokesman said.

Due to rising Taliban violence, over 3,800 persons have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
