Well-informed Palestinian sources revealed on Monday that President Mahmoud Abbas is to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo within the coming few days.
The sources were quoted by the Ramallah-based al-Ayyam Daily as saying that the two leaders will discuss the recent developments in the Palestinian territories and in the Arab world.
They added that Abbas and Mubarak will also discuss the preparations for a U.S.-proposed international peace conference to resume the Middle East peace process. The conference is reported to be held in the United States in November.
Abbas would intensify his contacts and debates with other Arab leaders within the coming few weeks to prepare for their participation in the international peace conference, according to the report.
On July 16, U.S. President George W. Bush proposed to hold an international conference that will group Israel, the Palestinians and some neighboring Arab states to help resume the stalled Middle East peace talks.
Abbas-Mubarak meeting will be the first of its kind since Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) took control of the Gaza Strip on June 14 after it defeated Abbas' Fatah movement and his security forces.
Abbas, in turn, sacked a Hamas-led coalition and formed a Western-backed government to rule the West Bank in Ramallah.
