The Ugandan military has unearthed a huge cache of assorted arms and ammunition hidden in a gorge in the northeastern part of the country bordering Sudan.
Capt. Bob Ogiki, the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) third division intelligence officer was quoted by the state-owned New Vision on Monday as saying the cache was found at Kanangorok village in Kaabong district, about one km from the Ugandan- Sudanese border.
He said the arms had been hidden in a cave about one kilometer from an abandoned road linking northeastern Uganda (Karamoja region)to southern Sudan through Kidepo National Park.
The weapons, including landmines, mortar shells and grenades and bombs, were found during a routine UPDF operation to curb arms trafficking along the border.
"As of now, we do not know who owns those arms, they could either belong to the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) or the Karimojong. The LRA are the main suspects because they are the ones who have been laying landmines," Ogiki said.
The LRA is a rebel group that has been fighting with the Ugandan government for the last 20 years but is now engaged in peace talks with the government.
Bomb experts from the UPDF field engineering department had started to work out the modalities of destroying the ammunition.
Capt. Ogiki said the finding was another boost to the UPDF's disarmament efforts.
The UPDF is currently carrying out a disarmament exercise to rid the region of tens of thousands of illegal guns used by Karimojong warriors to rustle cattle.
