Up to 28 people were killed and 50 others wounded by a suicide truck bomb in a village near the Tal Afar town in Nineveh province on Monday, local police source said.
"The latest report said that 28 people were killed and 50 others were injured, including eight people in critical condition, " Major General Najim Abdullah, police chief of the town of Tal Afar told Xinhua.
The attack took place in the morning when a suicide bomber parked his explosive-laden truck at a crowded area in a village near the town of Tal Afar, some 70 km west of Mosul, and blew it up, Abdullah said.
The truck was full with explosives covered by construction materials.
Earlier, a provincial police source put the toll at 27 killed and 22 others wounded in the attack that destroyed several homes.
Iraqi security forces rushed to the area and blocked the village to secure the scene for dozens of ambulances and private vehicles to evacuate killed and wounded people as rescue teams were removing debris looking for more survivors or bodies, Abdullah added.
Nineveh province, including its capital Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad has long been the hot bed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
