Pakistani Supreme Court will hear the petitions of Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of the country and leader of the opposition party Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) on Aug. 9, a local TV channel DAWN NEWS reported on Monday.

The hearing date of Nawaz Sharif's petitions has been set on Aug. 9 and Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will head the bench of the hearing, according to DAWN NEWS.

PML-N last Thursday filed two constitutional petitions in the Supreme Court.

According to the petitions, PML-N requested the federation should neither obstruct the return of Sharif family members, including Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahbaz Sharif who is also President of PML-N, from exile nor stop them from participating in the next general elections.

The acting President of PML-N Javed Hashmi was freed on Saturday from a jail after a full bench of the Supreme Court suspended the sentence of him in a treason case and ordered his release on bail on Friday.

Nawaz Sharif was twice elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan, serving two non-consecutive terms. His first term was from November 1, 1990 to July 18, 1993, and his second term was from February 17, 1997 to October 12, 1999.

Nawaz Sharif was sent into exile in 2000 one year after General Pervez Musharraf staged a bloodless military coup and dismissed his government. Currently Nawaz Sharif and his brother live in exile in London.
