The Chilean government is planning to submit a bill to its National Congress to boost the number of female political candidates, Chilean president Michelle Bachelet said here on Monday.
"In September, I will send a bill to amend the Popular Voting and Scrutiny Law for Political Parties to ensure a minimum level of women candidates that each political group must present for municipal and parliamentary elections." Bachelet told the 10th Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean(ECLAC), the conference is being held from August 6-9 in Quito, capital of Ecuador.
As a special guest to the meeting, Bachelet said she would propose that the government funds women candidates at a higher rate than their male counterparts, and impose fines on campaigns which do not include the minimum number of women.
Bachelet attended the meeting with Chile's Minister for Women Laura Albornoz. Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega and ECLAC Secretary General Jose Luis Machinea also took part in the meeting.
