A Vietnamese court on Tuesday passed an imprisonment sentence of 13 years to Bui Tien Dung, former general director of the Project Management Unit No. 18 under the Vietnamese Transport Ministry, for gambling and giving bribes.
The People's Court of Hanoi capital also asked Dung to pay fines of over 1.2 billion Vietnamese dong (VND) (76,125 U.S. dollars).
The court handed down jail terms of 3-7 years on seven of Dung's accomplices, and a suspended sentence of two years on one, for gambling, organizing gambling, and giving bribes.
Dung, detained in January 2006 for making bets on international soccer matches, spent 759,800 dollars on gambling, and 39,000 dollars and 550 million VND (roughly 34,400 dollars) on trying to bribe some influential figures, so that they would campaign for slighter charges against him.
