More than 100 security officials successfully rounded up dozens of suspected separatists in southern Thailand following two raids on homes in Yala province on Tuesday, according to local newspaper Bangkok Post's website.

The first raid, conducted at a home in Muang district, took place after the driver of a government officer was killed and his body brutally burnt by his attackers. Sixteen suspects were arrested aged between 17-56.

The second raid was conducted at a home in Raman district where a total of 32 people were arrested for their suspected involvement in the separatist movement in the south. Authorities also seized anti-government leaflets that were ready to be distributed to locals.

All 48 suspects have been sent for further questioning at the Inkayuth Boriharn military camp in Pattani province.

Yala and its neighboring provinces of Pattani and Narathiwat have been hit by insurgents on an almost daily basis and nearly 2, 400 persons have died in over three years of violence.
