A British soldier was killed by small arms fire attack in Iraq's second largest city of Basra, the British military said on Tuesday.

The soldier, assigned for 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh, was killed on Monday night during an operation in Basra, a military statement said.

Britain has about 5,500 troops in Iraq, which are mainly based near the Iraqi city of Basra, some 550 km south of Baghdad.

The latest death brings the number of British personnel killed in Iraq to about 165 since the Iraq war broke out in 2003.
