Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in the northern Egyptian port city of Alexandria Tuesday evening on a two-day visit to Egypt, the official MENA news agency reported.
Abbas is expected to hold talks Wednesday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the latest developments of the Palestinian issue.
During his stay in Egypt, a major Arab mediator for the Palestinian issue, Abbas will brief Mubarak on the outcome of his recent talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, according to MENA.
Abbas and Olmert held a meeting on Monday in the West Bank city of Jericho. It is the first time that an Israeli premier holds a meeting with a Palestinian leader in the Palestinian controlled territory.
In addition, Abbas and Mubarak will also discuss the preparations for a U.S.-proposed international peace conference to resume the Middle East peace process, which was reported to be held in the United States in November.
On July 16, U.S. President George W. Bush proposed to hold an international conference that will group Israel, the Palestinians and some neighboring Arab states to help resume the stalled Middle East peace talks.
