Common Market of the South (Mercosur) on Tuesday approved its internal rules and pledged to eradicate foot-and-mouth disease in the region.
Representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay discussed specific details of the bloc's internal regulations at its monthly meeting started from Monday. They also talked about strengthening relations with the European Union.
They also agreed to create a special commission to fight the foot-and-mouth disease in the region. The commission will implement the Foot-and-Mouth Free Mercosur Program, which aims to eliminate the disease in the region by December 2009.
Mercosur is a regional trade bloc founded in 1991. Its full members include Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Venezuela is in the process of acquiring full membership. The five other countries associated with the group are Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.
