Zambian President Mwanawasa has suspended Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) commissioner Ryan Chitoba, paving way for further investigation by the Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) into his alleged abuse of power, Zambia Times reported on Wednesday.

"To facilitate the investigation of these allegations or if it should be decided to charge you in a court of law, I am suspending you from the exercise of your function as commissioner of the Drug Enforcement Commission with immediate effect," President Mwanawasa said in a statement issued by state house spokesman John Musukuma.

Mwanawasa said he expected Chitoba to give the ACC all possible cooperation and assistance. Inspector General of Police Ephraim Mateyo would oversee the operations of the DEC, according to Zambia Times.

However, the president had not taken action against DEC deputy commissioner Jacob Koyi as he had not yet been furnished with details of the allegations against him by the ACC, according to Musukuma.

Last month, Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Peter Mumba confirmed receiving a report from the ACC that the security wing was investigating Chitoba and Koyi for alleged abuse of office.

The decision was made after Mwanawasa received particulars of the allegations leveled against the DEC commissioner in a letter from ACC chief Nixon Banda dated on August 2.
