Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Wednesday said the Pak-Afghan peace jirga would yield fruitful results in resolving issues between the two neighboring countries.

Aziz expressed the hope that his visit to the Afghan capital Kabul to open the peace jirga would pave the way towards settling various security issues between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"We want peace in Afghanistan and favor every move to ensure stability there for sustainable development," Aziz said.

Aziz said the two countries shared the history of common culture and heritage, and Pakistan provided assistance to Afghanistan in every difficult hour.

A Foreign Ministry statement on Wednesday said that Aziz would lead the Pakistani delegation to attend the joint peace jirga in Kabul and address the opening session along with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai agreed on holding the grand jirga at a meeting hosted by U.S. President George W Bush at the White House in September last year.

The joint grand jirga, which is scheduled to last from Aug. 9 to 11, is aimed at promoting peace in Afghanistan and tribal parts of Pakistan and countering the threat posed by terrorism and extremism.
