The World Bank (WB) has agreed to offer 561,000 U.S. dollars to finance 600 Angolan demobilized soldiers and 100 widows in Angola's eastern province of Moxico before the end of this year, a governmental official said on Wednesday.
Jose Bernardo Savikeya, director of the Moxico Provincial Ex- Soldiers Socio-Professional Reintegration Institute, told reporters that the WB-financed project will benefit the demobilized soldiers and widows who lost their husbands during the civil war by offering them farm tools or cattle or birds to find a means of livelihood.
According to the director, the World Bank has started the aid project since 2006 when it distributed 126 heads of cattle to demobilized soldiers and widows in three districts of the province.
The official also said some 1,400 demobilized soldiers will receive soon kits for carrying out socio-professional activities of carpentry, tailoring, blacksmithing, shoemaking and electricity in the light of the Bicese (Portugal) and Lusaka (Zambia) Peace Accords.
After the 27-year civil war ended in 2002, a large number of former soldiers can not make both ends meet after they returned home in rural areas due to lack of knowledge and skills to make a living.
