SADC trying to establish one-stop border |

The Zambian government has said that efforts to realize one-stop border to reduce unnecessary delays at border posts for traveling public is underway in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
Zambian Communication and Transport Permanent Secretary Peter Tembo said here Wednesday that the one-stop border concept is one of the frameworks SADC member states are pursuing in fostering regional integration in the area of infrastructure development.
Tembo said Zambia, as one of the SADC members, will greatly benefit from the facility when it becomes operational.
The permanent secretary stressed that the government has embarked on infrastructure development in the transport sector to bring it in line with the standards of the SADC protocols.
He said that under the one-stop border concept, immigration and customs officials will be placed in one office.
He said the one-stop border concept will be used at Chirundu border post in Southern province thereafter Kazungula in Western province on the border with Namibia.
Director of infrastructure development at the SADC Secretariat in Botswana Remmy Makumbe said SADC is merely adopting what is obtaining in Europe, citing the European Union (EU) which has reduced trade barriers among its member states.
