U.S. President George W. Bush is due to host French President Nicolas Sarkozy this weekend at the coastal home of Bush's parents in Kennebunkport, Maine, the White House said Wednesday.

The Bushes are having Sarkozy and his wife, Cecilia, to a private lunch on Saturday, White House spokesman Tony Snow said, adding U.S. First Lady Laura Bush extended the invitation during meetings of world leaders in Germany in June.

The Sarkozys, arrived in the United States Friday, are spending their summer holidays at the town of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, about 80 kilometers away from Kennebunkport.

Sarkozy, who won the French presidential run-off in early May, pledged to warm up French-U.S. relations.

The White House welcomed Sarkozy's victory in the elections, and said the Bush administration looks forward to having cooperation with the new French leader.

It was reported in June that Sarkozy would travel at the invitation of President Bush to New York and Washington at the end of September.

U.S.-French relations turned sour in 2003 after then French President Jacques Chirac strongly opposed the Iraq war launched by the United States at that time.
