Colombian authorities have turned over seven Colombians accused of drug smuggling, terrorism and human trafficking to U.S. courts, one of whom is accused of belonging to al-Qaeda, police said Wednesday.
Police formally handed over Bernardo Valdes, Ramon Matamba, Juan Vasquez, Humberto Herrera, Hector Lasso, Cesar Gil and Ricardo Nieto to the United States at the Catam military base in Bogota, which is on the outskirts of Eldorado International Airport.
Valdes, who was arrested in 2006, was sought by the United States for forging documents for people with links to al-Qaeda, and could be tried in the U.S. for immigrant smuggling, terrorism and money laundering.
All the others are accused of smuggling heroin or cocaine.
Colombia has extradited over 650 people, most of them to the United States for drug trafficking since President Alvaro Uribe took power in 2002.
