The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) together with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and various other development partners have committed to fund a five-year elaborate program covering 2008 to 2012.
Speaking Wednesday in Kinshasa, Babacar Cissthe, UNDP country director, said that the program, which is still under preparation, will be reviewed next month by the UNDP board of directors and is aimed at supporting and promoting five major components in order to establish a democratic, stable and legitimate system of governance in the country.
The program, whose implementation is expected to cost about to 268 million U.S. dollars, will lead to the realization of sustainable human development by lending support to political, administrative, economic and security dimensions in the DRC.
Among the various areas to be supported by the program include the national and regional assemblies, which will be enhanced through the framework for strengthening the electoral systems and processes, public administration reforms and communication for development.
Within the economic program, the UNDP will reinforce system for collecting national statistics in addition to supporting the country in the coordination and management of foreign aid. Another priority area targeted by the five-year program is the fight against diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria.
About 71 percent of DRC's population lives below the poverty line with 31 percent of all children below the age of five years suffering from chronic malnutrition.
