Unknown gunmen blew up a bridge linking the two provinces of Salahudin and Kirkuk in north of Baghdad on Thursday morning, a provincial police source said.
"Unknown gunmen planted large amounts of explosives under the Pitrokimiawiat bridge near the Makhoul mountain, and blew it up bringing down a large part of the bridge," the source from the Salahudin province told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The 30 meter-long concrete bridge, which span the Lower Zab River, a tributary for the Tigris River, located some 50 km north of Tikrit City, the capital of Salahudin province, the source said.
Several bridges have been targeted in Iraq, most notably the popular Sarafiya bridge, which was destroyed in April in a truck bombing that sent large sections of the steel structure crashing into the Tigris in central Baghdad.
