The Zimbabwe Defense Forces is committed to defending the country to ensure peace and tranquility, defense forces commander General Constantine Chiwenga said on Thursday.
Welcoming Angolan Armed Forces commander, General Francisco Pereira Furtado, to the country, Chiwenga said there was need to safeguard Zimbabwe's sovereignty and independence gained in 1980, New Ziana reported.
"We fought the liberation war to emancipate our people and now we are there to defend the very people with our own blood to make sure there is prosperity, peace and tranquility," he said.
Furtado arrived in Zimbabwe on Wednesday on a seven-day visit during which he is expected to tour army facilities and hold talks with senior military leaders.
Chiwenga paid tribute to the good relations that the defense forces of the two countries enjoyed, dating back to the days of the liberation struggle.
General Furtado said the armed forces of the two countries were working towards intensifying cooperation, particularly in the area of training, military ordinance and maintenance of assets.
He said Angola would also tap into the vast military experience that Zimbabwe defense forces enjoyed. "We can learn something from ZDF to help us in the processes we are developing now," he said.
He said the armed forces in his country were undergoing a process of transformation with the ex-combatants of the opposition UNITA party being integrated into the defense forces.
Earlier on, Furtado inspected a guard of honor mounted by the Zimbabwe Defense Forces. He later went into a closed-door meeting to be briefed on the security policy and organization of ZDF.
General Furtado will be a guest of honor at the celebrations to commemorate Heroes Day and Defense Forces Day on August 13 and 14 respectively.
