The Japanese government has given Zimbabwe a grant of 4 million U.S. dollars for the procurement of maize, the official The Herald reported on Thursday.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Japanese Embassy in Harare said the grant was extended following a request from the World Food Program in July last year.

The Zimbabwean government had declared 2007 a drought year.

"The grant is extended in the context of Millennium Development Goal number one, the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. It is hoped that this contribution will complement the Government's own efforts to feed the nation," the statement read.

At least 3.3 million people are expected to benefit from the grant.
