Ambassador Pascal Gayama of the Republic of Congo, president of the UN Security Council for August, welcomed on Thursday progress made at Arusha meeting on Darfur and called for concrete actions during the political process.
The council held consultations on Sudan Thursday morning. Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Hdi Annabi briefed council members on the talks that concluded in Arusha, Tanzania, earlier this week among the members of several movements that did not sign the Darfur Peace Agreement.
After the consultation, Gayama told reporters that the council welcomed the substantial progress made by the special envoys at Arusha and called on all parties to move from pre-negotiations to negotiations as soon as possible and to demonstrate their commitment to the political process through concrete actions, in particular cessation of hostilities.
The Darfur political process strode forward on Monday as rebel factions in the conflict-torn western Sudanese region of Darfur agreed to adopt a common negotiating position and resume peace talks with the government within three months.
