At least 12 people have been killed in a plane crash Friday in French Polynesia, Stuff.co.nz, a New Zealand media website, reported.

Informed by a local aviation source, the website reported that an Air Moorea twin engine Dorner aircraft has gone off the Moorea Island runway into the lagoon just after taking off for the capital Papeete.

It is reported that there were 20 passengers and crew members onboard the aircraft.

Moorea is one of French Polynesia's premier tourist destination.
